AE Films is very proud to announce we have been selected to show in the fifth annual Festivus Film Festival this coming January 2012! This is a first for us, and we're excited to be one of the very few action sports films being shown. We are scheduled to show at 6PM on Saturday January 14th at the Bug Theater in Denver, CO. For full festival schedule and ticket information visit www.festivusfilmfestival.com. See you there!
We'd like to thank everyone so far for joining us at our many tour stops throughout Colorado. This is by far our most successful tour! We've made many new friends and hopefully contributed some stoke to the fall season. Snow has fallen and a handful of areas are now open, hopefully you're getting out soon if you haven't already. Backcountry travelers be careful and stick to safe terrain, it's pretty slabby out there!
We have our final two shows of the tour upon us. Wednesday 11/16 we're at the Ramskeller on the CSU campus in Fort Collins, courtesy of the CSU Outdoors Club. And finally on 12/1 we wrap it up at Wilderness Exchange in Denver. We hope to see as many people as possible at these shows, let's party these last two up! Friends of Berthoud Pass will join us at Wilderness Exchange, and Avery Brewing will be supplying the craft suds that night. Let's toast that winter is right around the corner and make some plans to get some turns shall we?
For pictures from the tour, head over to our Facebook page by clicking on the link above. And "like" us while you're at it!
The tour is underway! We had an amazing evening at the AMC in Golden a couple Fridays back. A completely packed house is the right way to kick a tour off. We underestimated turnout bad enough that we ran out of Upslope beer about 10 minutes before showtime. Silver lining is that it was easier to get folks upstairs quickly. Emergency beer appeared from frantically sent runners (thanks Folsom boys!) prior, so all was right. Special thanks to Penn Burris at the American Alpine Club, Friends of Berthoud Pass and Folsom Skis (both linked below) for joining us that evening. We also had a very large of percentage of athletes and artists featured in the film joining us that night, as well as friends old and new...many from far away. Head over to our Facebook page to see pictures of the evening.
We're onto Crested Butte this weekend, very excited for that one...especially since the first snowstorm of the season will greet our arrival, and of course because of the strong CB athlete contingent in the film. Then it's up to Dillon and Vail the following weeks. We just added two more showings; a first time visit to Fort Collins and an encore metro area showing with the stellar folks at Wilderness Exchange in Denver. Spread the word, and we look forward to meeting you at a show soon!
Good news, more cities confirmed! Check our movie tour schedule for dates and venues. We have several more in the works which will confirm shortly. We will also start taking pre-orders for the DVD. Expect shipment beginning early October. DVDs will be available at every premiere event as well.
We are proud to announce the world premiere of "Facets on Winter" on Friday 9/23 in Golden CO! The American Alpine Club presents our first showing in the newly renovated Foss Auditorium in the American Mountaineering Center in downtown Golden (10th & Washington). Admission is $5 at the door, and AAC members get in free with membership card. Join us at 6:30 for pre-show happy hour and take a tour through the Bradford Washburn mountaineering museum. At 8PM the movie will begin in the upstairs auditorium. We have plans for an after-party as well, stay tuned at the theater for details. Friends of Berthoud Pass and Folsom Custom Skis will also be present in the lobby, stop by and say hi.
We're busily working on more tour dates, keep checking back regularly for updates. We hope to see all of you, our friends, there for the kickoff to Winter!
Although Arapahoe Basin just wrapped up their season about three weeks ago (and yes we were there!) it already feels like it's an eternity until the heavy snow falls again. We know we'll get our fix early as Loveland starts blowing snow in just a little over two months, but the heat we're feeling now has us hunkered down in the editing cave here in Boulder working away doing our best to stay cool and get you another ski movie. So what is this movie we're talking about?
Well, if you haven't yet, head over to the video page of this site and check out the trailer for our upcoming full length, "Facets of Winter". We think you'll quickly get a feel for the diverse lineup of killer segments showcasing a wide range of stories, skiers and terrain across the Colorado high country over the last couple seasons. Everything is piecing together smoothly and in the coming weeks we'll be able to start announcing premiere date and tour stops.
So if it's hot where you are, fire up the trailer and spin it a few times. Fall is around the corner, and then the big flakes will be right behind.
Finally, we'd like to express our hearty congratulations to two skiers featured in the upcoming movie, Frank and Brittany Konsella, who tied the knot a few weeks back in Crested Butte. Cheers to the first couple of CO ski mountaineering!"
Season continues strong here in the central Rockies, with snow totals above average and filming conditions great. We have gained some good momentum in recent weeks and we're getting some great footage. We recently finished a shoot with Tina Parks and Kara Copanas a couple weeks back in great pow and sun in the Sawatch Range backcountry. Soon we head south near Crested Butte to film local b/c chargers Frank Konsella and Tom Runcie on some excellent alpine lines.
While we're on the subject, we'd like to offer a hearty congratulations to Tom for his top 10 finish in this year's Subura Freeskiing Comp series. Next year it's podium time for him.
Spring conditions are pretty much here folks, hope you're getting some sunny turns in the good stuff. Be safe, and have fun.
Winter is back in a big way. So far the mountains near us are above average by quite a bit, and what's typically a drier month has turned out be a faucet that won't close. We'll take it! It means we have to be a bit safer out there, but once all is "go" there is some awesome powder to be had. Filming is underway to complete this movie and we're grinning ear to ear with the shoots on the schedule. We should have new stills up on the images page of the site as we go.
If you're local or not, heed the avalanche conditions in the back country as there have been some painful reminders this season already, including a good friend of ours at Wolf Creek. Head patroller Scott Kay who guided us on our last two shoots at Wolf Creek was unfortunately taken from us doing patrol work early this season. Our heartfelt condolences go out to his family. If you see a line you like out there, make sure it's safe before dropping...then have the time of your life.
We'd like to wish our athletes Ryan Banker and Tom Runcie good luck in the upcoming Subaru Freeskiing Competition stops in Jackson Hole and Crested Butte this season. You'll see both of them slaying big lines this fall in our movie. Also, a huge thumbs up and salute to athlete/veteran Joel Hunt for his continued training and progress towards his racing goals and wounded veteran ski program involvement. Finally, a mischevious grin goes to athlete/comedian Steve Caveney and his goal of leaving his mark on the mountain in a new and exciting way.
Now get out there and carve a trench.
Sorry so quiet everyone. The AE Films crew were reminded that the same mother nature that allows us to make movies in the first place can also make it pretty hard. Unstable snowpack in many of our planned filming locations coupled with other logistics issues didn't allow us enough time to gather needed footage for a movie to release this fall. We'll still be editing much of what did complete through this summer, but we were short a few key days to complete the remaining segments. The bottom line is we might have been able to cobble something together, but we'd rather wait and take a step forward with better product than "mail one in". We're very proud of the new movie, segments and story, and want to present them in the best light possible.
That being said, we will have some new production stills from filming this past season on the site soon to give you an idea where we're heading. In the meantime, we hope you're weathering the heat as best as possible. A few of us are still finding high patches of snow to keep skiing on the mind during these torturous months.
Just remember...tomorrow will be shorter than today.
Hey everyone.
A very mixed winter has come and gone, but our hefty consolation prize of spring is upon us. Filming has been a challenge this season with local snowpacks being somewhere between under to barely average as well as persistent weak layers in the back country. We have a few segments to go, but it’s fair to say that schedule has compressed to the right. That being said we’ve had some really great momentum these past few weeks with a return trip to Wolf Creek, a shoot at Echo Mountain as well as good backcountry courtesy of some recent late winter/early spring storms. We hope for a couple more good dumps, but have our sights set on steeper lines strengthening up here in the coming weeks. Time to get the lung burn on heaving camera gear up higher and higher peaks.
We still have last season’s movie Gravity Assist for sale on the store page, pick up your copy and we’ll throw a couple AE Films stickers in there for ya.
Make sure to head over to the store page and pick up your copy on DVD, or come grab one at one of the upcoming premieres! Tick-tock until winter....
Hey everyone.
We've confirmed two more showings! On Friday 11/20 the AE Films crew will visit The Eddy Line Brewery (926 South Main) in Buena Vista CO, for an 8PM showing of Gravity Assist. And on Wednesday 12/9 we'll be returning to Bent Gate Mountaineering in Golden CO for another 8PM show, we'd like to thank them for having us back!
Make sure to head over to the store page and pick up your copy on DVD, or come grab one at one of the upcoming premieres! Tick-tock until winter....
Hey everyone.
You digging how fall basically got skipped here in Colorado?
We wanted to give a huge thanks for everyone who showed up to our first three showings. World premiere night at Bacaro in Boulder was a huge success, despite the logistical and technical difficulties we ended up rolling the movie just a few minutes late to a packed rooftop. Huge thanks to the hometown crowd! Special thanks to DJ Vanish for the excellent warmup (check out the link to his site on the DVD page!), and the staff at Bacaro for having us. Also thanks to the Friends of Berthoud Pass crew for co-hosting the evening.
This past weekend Steve and Keith headed south to Pagosa Springs and Salida for two more showings. The drive was fantastic, as it was easy to see how much the high country is getting socked this early. Pagosa also had some venue difficulties but we managed to turn it into a rowdy night regardless and made some new friends. Learning a hard, hard lesson we stopped by Wolf Creek on the way out the next day to visit the folks there. Owner Davey Pitcher offered to turn on a lift for us to get a pre-opening day run...and our freaking skis & gear were back in Denver. Never. Again. We rolled into Salida that evening, and Pete Volkman and the crew at Benson's rolled out the red carpet. Dan drove down from Denver to meet us too, which was cool. They projected on the large outside wall and inside as well to a very respectable first time crowd for us. We got a lot of positive feedback...and drinks courtesy of our awesome hosts. We tried to return the favor to the crowd and gave away one of Steve's trademark "cutting edge straight ski technology" shot skis to a lucky attendee. Definitely looking forward to coming back to Benson's again.
Just a final snow report, both Wolf Creek and Monarch pass are looking pretty healthy for this time of year. That was pretty much the case for all the high passes we drove over, so if you haven't already gotten turns in it's only a matter of days before you can....or you're not trying hard enough!
We just confirmed a return visit showing in Golden at Bent Gate Mountaineering on Dec 9th, so stay tuned for details on that one. There's also rumblings of a small winter film fest sponsored by FOBP in December as well. As soon as that confirms we'll let you know.
Finally, Gravity Assist is now for sale on DVD on the website via PayPal! Head on over and pick up a copy for only $10 plus shipping, and get an extra for a friend.
Get yer damn skis out....it's time.
Great news! We are proud to announce the world premiere of Gravity Assist will be Saturday Oct 17th at Bacaro Tavern in Boulder CO...on the rooftop bar. Come by anytime after 8PM, show starts at 9PM! Additionally, we will be heading to Pagosa Springs CO (Bear Creek Saloon) on Oct 23rd, and Salida CO (Benson's) on Oct 24th for two more showings. We're working on confirming a couple more here shortly, stay tuned! DVDs will be back from the factory soon and available at all showings, and via the website soon as well.
The fall colors are changing, and the first snows have fallen in the hills. We're only a few short weeks away from the WROD in Colorado. Hope it's getting cold where you are, and you're ready for the next winter of your life! See you at the premieres!
Head over to the video section of the site...we have just posted the trailer for this year's movie. We're currently working on the premiere date and a few mountain town showings as well. You'll be the first to know as soon as these are confirmed!
The middle of summer has us jonesing for snow pretty bad, but the wait isn't that long until the lifts spin again. Time to think about scraping off the summer storage wax from your sticks and getting those quads in shape. El Nino is rumored to be winding up for decimation too, keep your tips crossed!
Skiing footage has been completed! Weather turned out to be the biggest factor this season with several days having to be rescheduled due to poor light, bad weather or unsafe conditions. But the slog is done and the crew filmed the last few backcountry lines a couple weeks back. With that, we are descending now into the AE editing cave for the summer to put this film together and test our livers in the process, courtesy of the mini-fridge down there. We'll have a teaser up for you very soon, followed by a trailer a bit later on.
With that, we'd like to announce the title of this year's film:
Welcome to our new website! Watch for content popping up as we go, including more video clips, stills and more. Thanks to Nick Jackson at Black Orion Design for the revamp.
Well, with an atypical round of April storms the backcountry season looks to have extended a bit and snow totals look to be back on track. With only a few more weeks to go of filming we look forward to some of the more adventurous lines. They definitely take a bit more effort as we're purely self powered as a film crew at the moment, but the rewards promise to be great. We'll give some more updates as we go. We recently were skunked by one of these storms last weekend on a shoot, the light simply got too bad very quickly. But it was great beta, and we already plan on returning with certain lines in mind. Still no such thing as a bad day out.
While you're here, pay a quick visit to some of our sponsors linked below, and tell 'em we sent ya.
We also have a working title which we hope to confirm for this year's movie. Until then, make sure you kill some of these awesome late season conditions, there are only so many weeks left. See you on the hill.
We have two film crews heading off to Monarch Pass and Wolf Creek. Several Assassins will be captured in all their glory (and hopefully debauchery) between both locations. Winter roars strong, keep your fingers crossed for high snow totals and safe avy conditions. We'd also like to extend a big welcome our newest sponsors Millet/Lafuma International as well as Alpenglow Ski & Paddle Sports out of Golden, Colorado.
See you in the hills.
